Oppenheimer (2023)

Image
Oppenheimer is a rich narrative that blends physics, politics, history and morality. The film focuses entirely about the moral dilemma faced by Dr Robert Oppenheimer because of his greatest invention. The biographical war drama film written and directed by Christopher Nolan narrates the life story of the father of the atomic bomb J Robert Oppenheimer. But unlike his previous films, this isn't about something epic. It's a documentary style movie told in the most grandeur and epic way. The narrative captures the audience attention right from the beginning.  "Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to man, For this He was chained to at rock and tortured for eternity" This quote at the beginning of the movie encapsulates the entire tale of one of the most controversial figures of the century. The film takes us through physics, history, politics, morality and human emotions.  As I said earlier, this isn't like any of Nolan's previous ventures but somethi...

Mother(2009)

Image
“You and me are one, we’ve got each other!” Mother( madeo ) is a 2009 South Korean thriller film directed by Bong Joon-ho , starring Kim Hye- ja and Won Bin . The plot follows a mother who, after her intellectually disabled son is accused of the murder of a young girl, attempts to find the true killer to get her son freed.  Last year when i finished watching Darren Aronofsky’s film “Mother(2017)” which was one of the best films I watched that year, I came to know about this particular film of the same name from South Korea. When I checked it out I was surprised because it was a film directed by Bong Joon Ho who is one of my favorite directors around the world. Ever since I watched his “Memories of the murder” and “Parasite” I am so excited to see his films, so this 2009 south Korean film entered into my watchlist but unfortunately, i completely forgot about it until i saw a high praising review of this film on the internet last week starting with “Bong Joon ho is God”, I w...

Them(ils) 2006 film review

Image
"They're already inside" Them(ils) is a 2006 French-Romanian home invasion horror film written and  directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud. The film is inspired by actual events that happened in the czech republic. The film was shot in 30 days on a budget of about $2.35 million. The film opens by showing a mother and daughter in a car passing through a country road in the middle of the night, having an argument which ends in a car crash. The amount of tension during this scene was just a warning we got before getting into the real horror of this  film. The main character in this film is a young woman named Clementine , who is a  highschool teacher living with her novelist boyfriend Lucas in a remote mansion. During the weekend at midnight, they are awakened by a strange noise and music outside their house which leads up to them going out to find out what’s happening and a pair of mysterious events begin to happen. They find out that they are being invaded by a group ...

Image
Recalled is a 2021 South Korean  mystery thriller directed by seo yoo-min starring Seo yea-ji, Kim kang-woo and Yeom Hye-ran in lead roles.  The film tells us the story of Soo-jin(seo yea-ji) who met with an accident during a hitchhiking and loses her memory. After that she begans to experience disturbing visions about deadly murders and accidents which happens in the future.  I am always being fascinated by Korean cinema and how they come up with these unique plots and scripts and this film is one of the best and highly recommended Korean films released this year. The story was quite predictable at the beginning and was a bit slow but as the movie progresses it became engaging and suspenseful and ended with an incredible twist. The emotional scenes were really touching. The major pros are: Acting : The performances of main characters were really good especially seo yea-ji, her performance was so amazing. And Kim kang-woo did a great job. Their combination scenes w...

The main character Grace Stewart lives in a remote country house with her two young children who are photosensitive. She hires three new servants and laters experiences mysterious events in the house which makes her believing that the house is haunted. Others is a beautifully scripted movie with an incredible plot which gives the audience an amazing experience. The suspenseful screenplay and the amazing performance of Nicole Kidman are one of the major pros of this film and the kids did a really great job especially the performance of the elder daughter, it felt so real.  The plot twist at the end is what makes this film a masterpiece and an unforgettable experience. It's a slow paced film as some may find it boring through the first half but it will become mor...

Carrie (1976)

Image
"He's going to laugh at you, they're all going to laugh at you!" I usually don't watch much horror films but this was one of the best horror experiences I've got in recent times.  Carrie is a 1976 American horror thriller film directed by Brian De Palma from a screenplay written by Lawrence D. Cohen, adapted from Stephen King's novel of the same name. Carrie was the first Stephen King novel to be published and the first to be adapted into a feature film. The film tells us about the story of Carrie white, a 17 year old teenager who is being dominated by her religious fanatic mother and being constantly bullied and mocked by her highschool peers. Carrie discovers that she possesses telekinetic powers and puts her powers to use when she is humiliated.  The film is Captivating and engaging from the very beginning to the end. I am really impressed by the exceptional directorial skills of Brian de palma. Especially the scenes at the prom. It was so intense. The...

Rope (1948) review

Image
"Well, Murder can be an Art too.  The power to kill can be just as satisfying as the power to create " Rope is a 1948 American psychological crime thriller directed by the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. The film was based on a play by Patrick Hamilton of the same name. The film was inspired by a murder of a 14 year old by two teenagers happened in 1928. "It's true that they say, Alfred Hitchcock never fails to amaze us" Rope was hitchcock's 1st movie in Technicolor. But the film is best known for its long continuous shots which makes it feel like a one shot movie. Philip Morgan and Brandon Shaw are the main characters in this movie. Just before hosting a dinner party, Philip and Brandon strangle their mutual friend David to death with a piece of rope, inspired from the philosophies they learned and they hide his body inside a chest upon which they arrange a buffet dinner. They invited the dead victim's fiance, his father and their professor for ...

But you can rule over life Life ain't nothing" Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is a 2020 American drama film directed by George C Wolfe and written by Ruben Santiago Hudson based on a play by August Wilson. I watched this film mainly because of two reasons: 1. This film was nominated for the Oscars 2. Chadwick Boseman's last film But the film was nothing short of Amazing. It will make you laugh, cry and applaud at the same time. "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is a beautifully written character study that is glued together by fantastic music and costumes" The film tells us the story of the birth of blue music and the life of its creator Ma Rainey . The film was based on a real life drama/play. The major positives in this film are: *Performances of the actors *Costuming, hair and makeup *Direction *Music The first half gets pretty boring ...

Mank (2020)

Image
"You cannot capture a man's entire life in two hours. All you can hope is to leave the impression of one"  This is one of the best lines from the film and it is quite accurate because the film "Mank" is also about a man, and it cannot capture his entire life, but definitely leave an impression. Mank is a biographical drama film about Herman J. Mankiewics , the screenwriter of the film Citizen kane(1941). directed by David Fincher. The screenplay of the film was written in the 1990's by late Jack Fincher (father of David Fincher) So it's clearly a passion project for Fincher. "Mank is a beautifully crafted tribute to the movie Citizen Kane"   Fincher had masterfully recreated the 1930s Hollywood and made a nostalgic film in which each shot is perfectly captured. Everything from production design to costumes were all perfect with the gorgeous black and white cinematography. The film has a lot of similarities to Citizen kane especially the nonl...

Nomadland (2020) Review

Image
"One of the things I loved most about this life is that there is no final goodbye. You know I've met hundreds of people out here and I don't ever say a final goodbye. I always just say "I'll see you down the road, And I do. And whether it's a month, or a year, or sometimes years, I see them again" Nomadland is a 2020 American drama film written and directed by Chloe Zhao. The film is based on the book Nomadland: Surviving America in 21st century by Jessica Bruder. The main characters in the film are a group of Nomads just like the name of the movie. Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)

Image
"Finally the bells have rung  The forces of darkness have heard it" The God died on earth. The light of hope that had set the day apart from the night is bound There is no other way. The war had begun" The much-anticipated #zacksnydersjusticeleague has finally arrived. I approached the film in two ways:  As a DC Fan and, As a film by my favourite director Zack Snyder Either way, this was one hundred percent satisfying. The story of the movie is in many ways better than the Josh Whedon version released in 2017.  The film revolves around the death of Superman,a symbol of hope. and the consequent arrival of the evil spirits who have been afraid to set foot on earth for so long and then the formation of Justice League. "Zack Snyder's Justice League is a success in whatever way the 2017 film failed"   Deep Character portrayals The Characterization of the villain Steppenwolf deserves special mention. In Snyder cut, he is not a waste like the one which released ...
