Minari (2020) review

 As the title says

"This is the movie we need right now"

Minari is a 2020 American drama film written and directed by Lee-Issac-Chung.

Many people have misunderstood that Minari is a Korean movie but it's actually an American movie based on the lives of Korean immigrants, so around 75% of the dialogues are Korean.

The film was produced by Plan B entertainment and distributed by A24.

The story is set in the 1980's showing the life of Jacob and his family who are Korean immigrants moves from California to a farmland in Arkansas hoping to build a sustainable farm and live the American dream.

Jacob's family consists of his wife Monica and his children Anne and David.

They move to a house with very little facilities. Their youngest son David has some kind of serious heart condition.

Monica is not all interested in moving and with all Jacob's plan of starting a farm in their current situation.

The film discusses about the changes taking place in their family with the arrival of Monika's mother from Korea.

The film tells the story through the perspective of Jacob's young son David. Everything that happens in that family gives him different life lessons.

Another character worth mentioning is the woman who is the mother of Monika. It was a character with lot of depth. Many important things in the story happens with their arrival.

All the characters in this film are so good that the audience can connect with them very well.

Looking at the performances of the actors, Steven Yeun as Jacob gave his career best performance, also the actress who played the role of Monika's mom was just amazing.

The backbone of this film is the excellent performances of the actors who have played the roles of each member of the family. The film manages to entertain as well as to inform with its slow moving plot, soft background music and amazing cinematography.

The children's performances were stunning.

Talking about the director Lee Issac Chung, He has made this film based on many things that have happened in his life. So it's basically a semi autobiography of him.

Let's just hope that he wins the oscar for all his hardwork.

The film received a golden globe award for the best foreign film this year.

And it also now received 6 Oscar nominations at the 93rd Academy awards including Best Actor, Best supporting actress, Best Director, Best picture, original screenplay and Best background score.

So there is a good chance that this film might win an Oscar.

Minari is a very realistic representation of a Korean family trying to adapt to a new place .

It's a very realistic feelgood drama which is not something that catches everyone's attention but for mature audiences.

VERDICT: REALISTIC
