Them(ils) 2006 film review

"They're already inside"

Them(ils) is a 2006 French-Romanian home invasion horror film written and  directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud. The film is inspired by actual events that happened in the czech republic. The film was shot in 30 days on a budget of about $2.35 million.

The film opens by showing a mother and daughter in a car passing through a country road in the middle of the night, having an argument which ends in a car crash. The amount of tension during this scene was just a warning we got before getting into the real horror of this  film.

The main character in this film is a young woman named Clementine, who is a  highschool teacher living with her novelist boyfriend Lucas in a remote mansion. During the weekend at midnight, they are awakened by a strange noise and music outside their house which leads up to them going out to find out what’s happening and a pair of mysterious events begin to happen. They find out that they are being invaded by a group of hooded stalkers and their survival from them is the main plot of this film.

The first thing i want to say to someone who is going to watch this film is, Don’t watch this film expecting a big storyline, because there isn’t but trust me it will keep you hooked till the last minute. There isn’t much gore or violence or even many jumpscares in this film, but what scares you is the atmosphere it creates. The sound design of this film is insane, it had a major role in giving you a claustrophobic experience while watching it. Honestly I had to pause a lot of time while watching this to catch my breath, it was so scary for me that i wish it ended sooner even though the film is under 80 minutes.

The characters are two normal likeable people, who at first are shown living their pleasant life before the horror show. There isn’t much character depth or development as it is in real time once the invasion begins, but we could really understand their fears and we care about them for their survival. It’s a very basic concept executed very brilliantly and being a true story makes it more terrifying. The sound design, score and camera work are the main positives of this film.

Overall,

Them(ils) is 77 minutes of tension, creepiness, terror and suspense, leaving you speechless at the end.

FINAL VERDICT : GREAT
