Rope (1948) review

"Well, Murder can be an Art too.

The power to kill can be just as satisfying as the power to create"

Rope is a 1948 American psychological crime thriller directed by the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock.

The film was based on a play by Patrick Hamilton of the same name.

The film was inspired by a murder of a 14 year old by two teenagers happened in 1928.

"It's true that they say, Alfred Hitchcock never fails to amaze us"

Rope was hitchcock's 1st movie in Technicolor. But the film is best known for its long continuous shots which makes it feel like a one shot movie.

Philip Morgan and Brandon Shaw are the main characters in this movie.

Just before hosting a dinner party, Philip and Brandon strangle their mutual friend David to death with a piece of rope, inspired from the philosophies they learned and they hide his body inside a chest upon which they arrange a buffet dinner. They invited the dead victim's fiance, his father and their professor for the dinner party. The film shows the events that takes place later.

"Rope is a magnificent and spine chilling 1hr 20 min thrill ride with psychological and suspenseful elements"

It was such an amazing concept, the way it shows the thinking's of superior and inferior humans which leads to violence and inhumanity.

Totally loved the one shot technique, felt like watching a play on screen.

Farley Granger and John Dall as Philip and Brandon did a good job showing the tension of the characters. But James Stewart as Rupert cadell, the professor nailed it by his performance, the way he kept breaking the weak suspect by counter interrogation was all amazing.

The cinematographer and the editor of the film needs to be appreciated. The staging and lighting was also amazing. Alfred Hitchcock tried to make some hidden cuts to make it look like a single shot film was really good especially without any technical developments at that time.

However, I am not saying that it is the best Alfred Hitchcock movie but it's still should be appreciated for his efforts making this experimental film and as we all know that Alfred Hitchcock laid the foundation for modern Cinema.

Totally,

Rope is an experimental movie with suspense elements and it's totally worth watching

VERDICT: SUSPENSEFUL

"It's only a piece of Rope Philip, an ordinary household article. Why hide it "
