Mother(2009)

“You and me are one, we’ve got each other!”

Mother( madeo ) is a 2009 South Korean thriller film directed by Bong Joon-ho, starring Kim Hye-ja and Won Bin. The plot follows a mother who, after her intellectually disabled son is accused of the murder of a young girl, attempts to find the true killer to get her son freed.

Last year when i finished watching Darren Aronofsky’s film “Mother(2017)” which was one of the best films I watched that year, I came to know about this particular film of the same name from South Korea. When I checked it out I was surprised because it was a film directed by Bong Joon Ho who is one of my favorite directors around the world. Ever since I watched his “Memories of the murder” and “Parasite” I am so excited to see his films, so this 2009 south Korean film entered into my watchlist but unfortunately, i completely forgot about it until i saw a high praising review of this film on the internet last week starting with “Bong Joon ho is God”, I was so excited so i decided to check it out as fast as possible and boy it was amazing. I will say this is one of the best films I watched from south Korea and foreign international cinema. I wouldn’t call it Bong’s best but still this one is a masterpiece.

The opening scene itself made me hooked into the movie, it was so captivating. In fact my most favorite parts in this movie are its opening and its ending. The film follows the mother of an intellectually disabled child that goes to any extent for the welfare of her child and to prove his innocence. The acting was a major positive in this film. Kim hye ja delivers an exceptional performance as the nameless mother and also Won Bin as the mentally disabled child. There was a particular scene in the movie( I don’t want to spoil it) that reminded me of a scene from the parasite that I immediately pointed my finger towards the screen like Rick Dalton(Leo DiCaprio) does in Once upon a time in Hollywood.

The film is a powerful representation of unconditional love of a mother which was so shocking and heartbreaking. Bong joon ho made a fascinating character study on the main characters and the film had the best set ups and pay offs. My most favourite parts of this film as i mentioned before was the opening scene and the ending scene. I was thoroughly invested and was intrigued throughout the entire movie, i kept thinking about how it was going to end and i have to say it just blew my mind away. Perfect ending for a perfect film. The cinematography, the editing , everything about this film was great. After watching the film i feel like getting an acupuncture

Overall,

Mother is a brilliantly crafted mystery thriller which was so intriguing from start and ended completely leaving the audience in awe.

FINAL VERDICT: MASTERPIECE
